Before I left Tiranë, I met another long distance cyclist at the hostel. His name is Johannes and he’s from Germany. We had dinner together and it was nice talking to another cyclist. Johannes started from Germany and is making a loop around the Balkans before going back home to start his job in September.
The next morning, I started my ride to Durrës at 5:30. I mainly cycled along a service road that ran parallel to the main road. When I reached the Backpackers Hostel in Durrës I had ridden about 26 miles.
There isn’t much to do in Durrës. In the afternoon, I walked to The Venetian Tower of Durrës, Durrës Amphitheater, and the Byzantine Forum. None of them impressed me. Once I went to Rome, no ruins are worth seeing.
In the hostel, I met a Chinese guy named Qu. We hung out the next day and walked to Durrës Beach. Surprisingly, it’s the only Balkan beach that I’ve been to that has sand. But the temperature was so hot that we only stayed for about an hour before taking a taxi back to the hostel.
There’s another Chinese woman who arrived at the hostel yesterday. Her English name is Teresa. The three of us might grab dinner together tonight. I plan on leaving at 5:30 tomorrow morning to cycle to Divjakë so I have to sleep early tonight.
