Days 36 and 37: Ferry from Split to Dubrovnik, then Rest Day in Dubrovnik

Yesterday, I spent more time in Split by walking around the old town. I bought the ferry ticket for €50 for myself then paid €25 for the bicycle once I boarded the catamaran. The entire trip to Dubrovnik was over 5 hours with several stops in between. After arriving at the port at 8:20 PM, I cycled about a mile to Hostel Hakuna Matata and arrived before the sunset. As soon as I checked in I went to bed.

This morning, I woke up at 6 then walked about 20 minutes to the old town in Dubrovnik. I was glad I went there early to avoid the crowd, but most places weren’t open yet. I saw the Lovrjenac Fortress outside the city walls before walking inside the walls to old town.

Like many other cities in Croatia that I’ve been to, the streets are narrow. I didn’t feel many people live there since so many restaurants and cafes catered to tourists. I wanted to walk on the walls of the old town but I needed to pay €40 for a ticket. I decided against the idea.

The best way to see the old town is just to wander around. I went inside a couple of churches and took many photographs of the streets. Since old town isn’t that big, I didn’t stay too long and came back to the hostel at 10 AM.

I took a nap then ate a burger for lunch. Tomorrow, I’ll be cycling out of Dubrovnik and out of Croatia into Montenegro.

Overall, the Croatian coast is very beautiful. I love seeing the mountains and the sea in one place. Next time, I’ll do more island hopping and visit the capital, Zagreb.

I missed seeing Pavle, the Croatian traveler I met in Paphos, Cyprus, last year. He lives in Metković. Since I took the ferry from Split to Dubrovnik I missed his town. Maybe I’ll see Pavle next time when I’m in Croatia. However, I did meet David and Ervin in Novigrad. I hope to see them again.
