Day 33: Drage to Šibenik

I didn’t go see the sunset yesterday because I was too tired. The sun was going to set anyway, with or without me.

This morning, I left the guesthouse in Drage before 6 and mainly rode on the D8 route to Šibenik. After 25 miles of cycling, I arrived at Hostel Splendido a little after 8 AM.

I wasn’t surprised that no one was at the reception since it was too early to check-in. I stored my bicycle and panniers upstairs then I walked to the old town.

The streets in Šibenik were narrow and reminded me of the streets in Zadar. I ended up going to the Cathedral of St. James, which has over 70 carved heads on the building. Some of them are of animals, such as a dog or a lion. The ticket to the cathedral also included Civitas Sacra, which is a church museum.

I then walked to the St. Michael's Fortress, but I didn’t go inside because I didn’t feel like it. That’s the great thing about traveling solo, I get to do whatever I want.

When I came back to the hostel, I chatted with a bicycle tourist who was leaving the hostel. His name is Greg and he doesn’t have any social media accounts and doesn’t document his journey either. I found him interesting because he bought a bicycle in Turkey and will cycle to Italy, then he will just give the bike away. He told me he’s done several bike tours and at the end of his journeys he gives away his bicycle. This gives me the idea of buying a bicycle in Latin America, if I want to cycle tour there, then I’ll give it away at the end. Greg is very free spirited and doesn’t know where he’s staying for the night. He’s also a bit crazy and starts his ride at noon, the hottest time of the day.

After checking in, I took a two hour nap, then showered. I didn’t feel like eating at a restaurant so I went to the grocery store and bought ramen, canned sardines, canned corn, and canned ham. After eating these for dinner I will go to sleep early since I have to ride about 32 miles to Trogir tomorrow. There will be some hills too.

Thank you Croatia for acknowledging cyclists!
