Days 165 to 167: Three Days in Dresden, Germany

I stayed for three nights in Dresden with Dmytro, my Couchsurfing host. Dmytro works as a physics professor and is into geocaching, among other interests. I had a good time chatting with him during dinner over a glass of wine and some cheese. Dmytro also recommended some spots for me to visit in Dresden.

For the first full day I explored the city center on foot and visited all the important tourist areas. There are so many old churches, buildings, and sculptures in Dresden. The most famous church is the Frauenkirche Dresden. It was rebuilt after the firebomb in Dresden during WWII. The black bricks are the original ones. My favorite spot in Dresden is the Dresden Zwinger. It’s a baroque palace that has many fancy sculptures. As a minimalist I like simple things, but I also appreciate certain things that are artsy and decorative.

As a side note, when I travel I use Wikivoyage, the website or the app, to research about a city’s main attractions. I also ask ChatGPT about things to do in a city and it gives me a nice summary. I used to carry a guide book when I traveled over ten years ago, but it’s unnecessary these days.

Yesterday, I bought a one-day transit pass for €9 and went to the north side of the Elbe River. There is a dairy shop that’s considered the most beautiful shop in the world. It’s called Pfunds Molkerei. The entire interior is covered in handmade tiles. I wanted to buy something there, but the amount of tourists, including me, made me want to get out of there as fast as possible.

I walked along the river bank for a long time to see the Albrechtsberg Palace then took the bus farther away from the city center to do more exploration. My legs were so tired by then so I took the ferry then a tram back into town.

I saw the main attractions in Dresden in two days and if I wanted to visit some museums then I would stay longer. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like visiting any museums.

A few days ago, I finished listening to the audio book Moral Ambition. It’s a good book and made me think about what I can do to change the world for the better and to change myself. I decided to become a “part-time” vegetarian. I know that eating vegetarian food is hard when traveling so I’m committing myself to eat one vegetarian meal per day. My other meal can have meat. So far, I’ve been doing that for the past three days.

Today, I’ll be taking the bus back to Wrocław, Poland. I will be there for another week then I’ll take a flight to Cyprus on the 25th to get out of the Schengen Area.
