Day 4: Easton to Bethlehem
Yesterday morning, I cycled 12 miles from Easton to north Bethlehem mainly on the D&L Trail that’s next to the Lehigh River. It was weird finding the trail after getting off the 3rd Street Bridge. I thought I was riding through a private property since the place looked like a junkyard. After finding the trail, I was able to relax and enjoy the ride.
I arrived at Robin’s house shortly after 11 AM. Robin gave me a tour of her house. At noon, she had to get back to work at Liberty High School that’s just two blocks away from her house. She had forgotten to bring her iced tea so I delivered to her at the school. When I came back to the house I noticed that one of Robin’s dogs had eaten my bag of beef jerky that I left on the dining room table. Luckily, the dog didn’t get sick.
At Robin’s, I wrote reviews for my previous Warmshowers hosts and did a bit of housekeeping on the computer. I called my friend Omar, who lives in Santa Barbara, to catch up with him since he sent me an email on the first day of my trip.
Around 2 PM, I was picked up by Patrick, a friend of my father. He lives in Bethlehem as well. He just got off work so we were able to grab lunch at Francisco's Salvadoreno Restaurant.
I tried not to talk about politics with Pat since we don’t agree on many things, but I was glad to hear that he’ll be retiring from his job at Verizon in one and half years. His retirement plans include buying a trailer and go camping around the country and traveling in Asia.
After lunch I came back to Robin’s house and her friend Alexis was there. We chatted for a while before I took a shower.
Robin and I tried to decide what to do for the rest of the day. We have a mutual friend named Remy. He wasn’t feeling well so we couldn’t meet. Robin and I ended up order a large pizza from Fratelli Pizzeria for dinner.
We watched the sun go down in the backyard while eating the pizza. I was so tired by the time we finished dinner that I went to bed around 8:30.
I need to decide which route I want to take to Canada soon. There are three options. One is to continue following the Atlantic Coast Route to Bar Harbor, Maine, then take a ferry to Nova Scotia. Another option is to switch to the Empire State Trail at New Paltz, New York, then go all the way north to Montreal. A good portion of this route will be on the road. The last option is to go on the Empire State Trail at New Paltz, but go west near Albany, then all the way to Buffalo before going to Canada. I’m thinking doing option one or option three. Right now, I’m leaning toward option three since most of the ride is on bike trails.
Robin said that I can stay on Friday night as well. The forecast indicates rain on Friday so I might take up on her offer. I plan to leave on Saturday morning, but I have no Warmshowers hosts lined up since some of them don’t reply or they are busy. I’ll have to research about campgrounds.
Today, Robin is taking two hours off from work so we can have brunch. Then I plan to meet with Remy if he’s feeling better. I don’t have any plans after that. Today and tomorrow will be rest days.
