Day 3: Lambertville to Easton, PA

Yesterday morning, after eating breakfast with Don I packed up my things and bid farewell. Don and Denise will go to South Korea for a supported bicycle tour the day after so they will be busy packing.

Bill, the cyclist I had met, texted me and told me that he left his hotel early and was already on his way to Phillipsburg. I guess I won’t be seeing him again since he is a faster rider.

I got on the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail in Lambertville. The gravel path was great and is similar to the GAP trail in Cumberland, Maryland. With the green canopy above me, I was really enjoying this path.

After about two hours of riding, I reached Frenchtown after pedaling 16.5 miles. I ate a huge reuben sandwich at Frenchtown Subs and rested for a bit. I’ve been lucky that it didn’t rain this morning. The forecast indicated rain in the late afternoon. I want to get to Easton, PA, around 4:30 PM to avoid the rain.

I left Frenchtown around 1 PM and continued on the trail. Just a couple of miles from reaching Milford the trail ended, so I turned onto the road that’s parallel to the trail and rode into Milford.

I crossed the bridge to the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River trying to get on the Delaware canal trail there, but that section of the trail was closed so I had to backtrack to Milford and ride on the road toward Riegelsville. The road had some unfriendly hills, but I was able to get over them except for one hill where I had to walk my bike.

After reaching Riegelsville on the Pennsylvania side, I got on the canal trail again and cycled all the way to Easton. The trail wasn’t as good as the one from Lambertville to Milford. It was narrow and bumpy. There were a lot of geese and their goslings on the trail and the adult geese would hiss at me as I passed by. One goose actually tried to attack me as I cycled by. Luckily, no one was hurt.

It took me about three hours to ride about 22 miles from Frenchtown to Easton that afternoon. Once I reached Easton I went through downtown and then had to walk my bike up a steep hill to get to my Warmshowers host’s house. I arrived at 4:15 PM, having ridden just shy of 39 miles total.

Elizabeth is my host. She’s actually the mother of Henry, a Warmshowers host whom I stayed with in Florida back in 2023. Elizabeth is also a painter and works at a salvage place. Her website is elizabethsnelling.com.

We had Chinese takeout for dinner and chatted about politics. I was glad that we agreed politically so there wasn’t a conflict in our conversation.

After dinner, I took a much needed shower then worked on the computer a bit more before going to bed around 8:30.

This morning, I woke up at 7:30. Elizabeth and I just had our breakfast. I had a cup of coffee and a bagel. I need to get on the road before 10 AM so I can reach my friend Robin’s house in north Bethlehem between 11 and noon. It’s a 12 mile ride from here.
