Day 20: Newark to Rochester

After leaving Paul’s house yesterday, I decided to grab breakfast at Oats and O’s. I had a chorizo wrap and a cup of coffee as I watched the staff do their work. They were very nice to every customer. This is a great indicator of a well run coffee shop.

I got on the road soon after my meal and cycled on the muddy bike trail. I didn’t ride on Route 31 this time since there were many cars in the morning and I didn’t feel like getting sprayed on.

It rained the whole time while I was riding. Finally, at the town of Fairport, I took a rest under a covered area.

There I met a canal volunteer named Jeff. He actually gets paid to walk up and down the bike path checking for downed trees and other issues on the canal. I appreciated his work because it’s people like Jeff who keep the bike path well maintained.

I passed by two more canal locks and pedaled the rest of the way to Rochester. I arrived around 1:15 PM, just in time for me to pick up my prescription at a CVS pharmacy before they went on lunch break. I ended up having a steamy bowl of ramen at Crave restaurant before arriving at my Warmshowers host Peter’s house. I had ridden 36.9 miles since the morning. That’s a comfortable distance that I enjoy riding in one day.

Peter lives with his two cats and works as a data analyst. He was sewing his own bicycle bags as we chatted.

At every place I’ve stayed I try to pay attention to the books that people have on their shelves and Peter has many books that I’ve read or knew of. We seem to have a lot in common not just in cycling, but also in Buddhism and science.

After settling down, I walked about 10 minutes to the South Wedge district of Rochester. I had a Roc City Chop sandwich at River Street Sandwich Makers. The cashier/waitress was so kind and always had a smile on her face. Another well run restaurant.

After dinner, I bought an orange soda, a yogurt, and a bar of chocolate at Abundance Food Co-op. I always appreciate a local food co-op since not many places have them. The prices were a bit expensive, but I was glad to be supporting local shops.

I also bought some vegan gummy candies at Marilla's Mindful Supplies. They tasted like regular gummy candies but without gluten.

When I came back to Peter’s house, I was so tired that I went to bed early again. I woke up around 5:30 when the first light came into my room. I just love waking up by the sun.

I took a shower and did laundry this morning. I will explore more of Rochester today since I’m taking a rest today and another one tomorrow with a different host.
