Day 14: Rest Day in Troy

Yesterday after writing my blog post, I walked about 35 minutes to downtown Troy. I knew there was a big hill so I didn’t take my bike.

At Monument Square, there were so many vendors at the farmers market that they took up several city blocks. It’s definitely the biggest farmers market I’ve ever been to.

I was on the hunt for beef jerky and trail mix since they are my go-to snacks on the road and I’m running out of them. I didn’t see any vendors selling them though.

Emma had told me that Famous Lunch is a reasonable place to grab a meal if I want hot dogs. I ended up having their daily special, which is four hot dogs and a soda for $8. Their hot dogs were half the size of a regular hot dog so it felt I only ate two.

After walking back to Emma’s house, I had to drive to the Albany Airport to pick up Giuseppe, Emma’s husband, since everyone is out and he needed a ride. I was hesitant at first since I haven’t driven in a while and I’m at a foreign place. I decided to take the local roads to the airport rather than the highway. I was able to drive safely to the airport and picked up Giuseppe.

Giuseppe also works in IT and he just went to Florida to see an ACDC concert. When we came back, he made some couscous with tuna for me.

I left Emma and Giuseppe’s house around 1:30 PM and rode about 2.1 miles across Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s campus to get to my Warmshowers host’s house.

Chris is my host for the day. After I took a shower, I sent out more Warmshowers requests for the next several days.

Around 5 PM, Chris and I went to dinner at Brown’s Brewing Company in downtown Troy. Good thing they have a different menu than the one I went to the night before. I had a pulled pork sandwich this time.

Chris and I talked about many things, but he’s a private person so I won’t share too many details about our conversation. However, I was impressed that he has cycled in Europe and Africa.

When we came back to the house, I was so tired that I went to bed at 7 PM.

This morning, I woke up at 7 AM and felt fully rested. I just had breakfast with Chris while we chatted a while about the current political situation. I will leave soon and ride west for about 68 miles to a campground in Fort Plain. It’ll be a long day of riding.
