Day 28: Ferry from Pula to Mali Lošinj, then Bike to Veli Lošinj

After writing my previous blog post, I went to get some dinner and saw the Temple of Augustus in Pula. To be honest, after visiting Rome nothing really compares.

Hostel Antique is a very nice hostel and I enjoyed the air conditioning in the kitchen area and in the dorm. I ended up going to sleep around 7 PM and woke up at 5:15 AM.

I only cycled about a mile to the ferry terminal and arrived an hour early. The ferry to Mali Lošinj wasn’t canceled and the boat ride took about 2:20 hours to the island of Lošinj.

When I arrived at the port of Mali Lošinj, it was already hot. I had to pedal another 4 miles to the HI Hostel in the village of Veli Lošinj, going up some hills.

At 10 AM, I finally reached the hostel. However, the place looked empty. No receptionist, no guests. I waited for an hour inside and finally the receptionist and the cleaning lady saw me. It turned out they had closed the hostel temporarily for cleaning and weren’t expecting any guests. I was the last guest who booked the hostel on booking.com before they closed it. Lucky for me, they allowed me to stay at the hostel even though I’ll be the only guest in the entire place.

The ferry service, Krilo, informed me that the Friday ferry from Mali Lošinj to Zadar has been canceled. Looks like I need to stay for two more nights in the hostel and get on the Saturday morning ferry. This is unexpected. Such is the nature of an adventure.

I wish I was staying at a more social hostel. I don’t know what to do for the next two days. Mali Lošinj is a small village with few restaurants. There is a beach that I will go to today. That’s about all there is in this place. I’ll be very bored. Maybe this is a good thing. I get to do some reflecting.

Last night was so hot. The dorm doesn’t have air conditioning. The receptionist loaned me a fan and it worked ok. I can’t believe I’m stuck on an island in Croatia. But there are worse things in the world.
