Days 22 and 23: Train from Maribor to Ljubljana, then a Rest Day in Ljubljana

Yesterday morning, I left Tatjana’s place early because she had a cleaning lady over. I arrived at the Maribor train station hours before my departure so I took my time and had a kebab wrap for breakfast.

The train to Ljubljana arrived on time at 11:35 AM. However, the platform for the train was about three feet above the platform of the station. Luckily, there were other cyclists getting on the same train and one of them helped me get my bike on the train.

After about three hours, I arrived in Ljubljana. There is some major renovations at the station and I had to push my bike up a flight of stairs. The bike ramp was too narrow since I also have panniers on my bike. Again, another lady helped me by lifting the back wheel so I could move my bike up the stairs. I’m so grateful for the kindness of strangers!

I rode less than two miles to the Guesthouse GreenSLO hostel and I was so sweaty by the time I arrived. Due to heat, I only went out for an early dinner then came back to the hostel.

This morning, I woke up before 6 AM and cycled into Ljubljana city center then walked around to do some exploration of my own.

Even though Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, it’s very walkable. I went to Metelkova, which is full of houses covered in graffiti. After parking my bike by a park, I walked to the Three Bridge, the Dragon Bridge, Central Market, Town Square, Plečnik House, National and University Library, Republic Square, and Tivoli Park. I opted not to walk up the steep hill to Ljubljana Castle. It would be too much walking for me.

I was glad that I did most of my exploration in the morning to avoid the heat, but most attractions didn’t open until later. After eating a Balkan lunch at Čevabdžinica Sarajevo '84 restaurant, I biked back to the hostel before noon.

On the computer, I tried to plan my route in Croatia, which will be my next country. I want to do some island hopping, but the accommodations are so expensive since it’s the high season. There aren’t many Warmshowers hosts either. I really don’t want to cycle in the mountains inland and I want to avoid the EuroVelo 8 coastal route due to the traffic. I guess I’ll have to see what happens. It’s an adventure for sure.

I don’t know what I’ll do for the rest of the afternoon. I will have to wake up early again tomorrow to catch the 6:45 AM train to Koper. I will then cycle about 15 miles to Piran and stay at a hostel for the night.
