Yesterday was a rest day at Komfort-Apartments & Gästezimmer guesthouse in Oberlungitz. I took a two hour nap in the morning, then cycled less than a mile to Erlebnisheuriger Zum Kellerschlössl for a buffet lunch. It’s the only restaurant in the village so I had only one choice. By the time I arrived at the restaurant I was so sweaty. I learned that I shouldn’t cycle past noon in this heat wave.
The restaurant had a good selection of Austrian food, which I really enjoyed. I ate four plates of food. It was so much that it was my only meal of the day. When I got back to the guesthouse I took another nap.
Upon doing some research, I learned that there’s a heat dome in Western and Central Europe right now. Temperatures in Spain and France reached mid-40C, or above 100F. The heat dome traps the heat and in the part of Europe that I’m cycling through the temperature will be in the mid-30s, or in the 90F range, for the next couple of weeks at least.
I decided to get up at 4 AM this morning so I can make myself a bowl of instant ramen for breakfast then started my ride at 5 AM, shortly after the sunrise.
The temperature was cooler in the morning so I made good distance. There were still hills, but they were not as bad as the one I went through in the rain a couple days before. Even though I still had to push my bike up some hills, at least I wasn’t wet or overheating.
By 8 AM, I reached Café Bäckerei Wilfling, a bakery in the small village of Söchau. I enjoyed a pastry, but I only had €5 in cash so I couldn’t afford to buy a cup of coffee since the shop owner didn’t take credit cards.
After this break, I cycled for another hour to Fehring, which was my destination for the day. Upon seeing a Billa supermarket outside of the town, I stopped to purchase some sausages, instant ramen, and nuts for the road. I took out €200 in cash from an ATM before enjoying an ham and eggs breakfast at Café Liebling. Good thing I got the cash because the cafe didn’t accept credit cards either.
I was so glad that I reached the town of Fehring in mid-morning after riding 34.3 miles. I’m currently at a commune called Cambium that used to be a military base. I’m staying inside a large building where I’ll be sleeping on a couch tonight. Christian, my Warmshowers host, lives in the commune and agreed to host me for the night. I’ll be seeing more of him when he gets back from an errand later in the afternoon.
I plan on taking a shower then relax a bit. It’s still early, just around noon. I don’t really know what to do for the rest of the day since I arrived so early. But I do plan on waking up early and start my ride at 5 AM tomorrow to avoid the heat. This might be my routine until the weather cools down and the temperature becomes more reasonable for cycling.
