After writing my blog post yesterday, I met a new roommate named Oliver. He’s a young lad from Russia and suffered memory loss from a boxing match recently. I surely don’t want to be in his shoes. The dorm was full last night and apparently I was snoring too loud. I didn’t even notice.
This morning, I woke up at 5:15 and got to the train station around 6 AM. The train to Koper was supposed to leave at 6:45, but it stayed on the tracks for an hour.
I got very lucky when someone told me that the train will split with one half going to Koper and the other half going to Rijeka, Croatia. I had put my bicycle in the wrong train car. That would have been bad if my bicycle went to Rijeka and I went to Koper. My trip would have been a mess if that happened.
The train ride took forever because it kept on stopping randomly on the tracks. I didn’t get to Koper until 11:10 AM.
After I got my bike down from the train, I told myself that I would never take the bike on a train again in Slovenia. Such a nightmare.
Since the train arrived late, now I have to ride about 13 miles to Piran in the heat. Luckily, most of it was on a bike path.
I took refuge in Izola, which is a town at the half way point, and had myself a kebab wrap for lunch. Then I cycled the rest of the way to Piran.
I checked into Hostel Adriatic Piran at 1 PM. While resting in the hostel kitchen, I chatted with two French travelers, Laure and Gauttier. Laure told me about her Workaway experience in Slovenia. I’m considering doing a Workaway in Albania so it was nice to get some information. Gauttier and Laure were so kind that they even offered me some watermelons. Much appreciated!
For the rest of the afternoon, I walked around the town. Not much to see except for Tartini Square and Church of St. George.
The heat was scorching and I tried to walk under the shades of the buildings. Even then I was sweating profusely. I had an octopus salad as an early dinner before coming back to the hostel and taking a shower.
I booked a rather expensive accommodation for tomorrow for $103 at the town of Novigrad, Croatia. I had a couple of options, including wild camping and a poorly rated hostel. I decided to keep myself sane in this heat by treating myself. I will leave in the early morning again tomorrow.
