Days 181 to 183: Three Days in Limassol

I was at Limassol for three days. I had a nice and relaxing time, but there aren’t too many things to see for three days. An average tourist should spend about two day at the most.

I stayed at Bee Hostel the whole time since Fraser told me the White Hostel has a bed bug problem. I was glad that I didn’t stay there.

The highlights in Limassol are the promenade, the Old Town, and the Archeological Site of Kourion that’s 45 minutes by bus outside of the city. I opted to not pay for a ticket to see the Lemesos Castle in town since it’s very small. Not really a castle, more like a keep.

On my third day, I convinced Belen to visit Limassol rather than the small town of Lefkara since she was thinking about taking a day trip somewhere. We met by the promenade and walked around the Old Town, had lunch, then had milkshakes on the promenade before she took the bus back to Larnaca for her early morning flight the next day.

Belen and I have many things in common, such as the love of traveling. She’s been to 51 countries so far. I’ve only been to 20. But it’s not a contest.

I feel each person travels for a reason. A while ago, I wrote down a list of reasons of why I travel. Here they are in no particular order:

  • Experience new things
  • Eat different foods
  • Make memories
  • Explore
  • Sightsee
  • Generate new ideas for myself and my future life
  • Change oneself
  • Form ideas that might change the world
  • Discover new books and new music
  • Meet new friends
  • Learn to live without
  • Enjoy life

I’m sure there are more reasons than these, but that what I came up with so far.

Traveling is an educating experience for me, far better than schooling. Not only do I gain knowledge, but I also gain many abilities. The ability to organize, to problem solve, to get along with strangers, to be calm and think clearly, and to be grateful.

I wish I had traveled more when I was in my 20s, but I wasn’t in a good healthy mental state at the time. Maybe it’s better to travel in my early 40s compared to my 20s due to better finances. I’m just glad I have the funds to travel and don’t have to work.

Talking about work, I had applied to a remote web developer job at Canonical, the company that makes Ubuntu Linux. I passed the coding test about two weeks ago, now they want me to take yet another test, an aptitude test. This would be the third assignment from them. I feel their application process is too one-sided. I didn’t even have a chance to ask the hiring manager anything regarding the company or the position. So I sent an email to him to see if I can ask some of my questions, but he hasn’t answered me back. If their hiring process is for me to complete a series of assignments rather than having a dialogue then I’m not a good fit for them. I’m not sure if I want to continue with the application. I’ll wait and see.

I took the bus from Limassol to Paphos yesterday. I had to wait about two hours to get the bus since the 9 AM bus never showed. I’ll be in Paphos for four nights total at The Hostel Inn since I didn’t get any hosting confirmations from Couchsurfing hosts. I don’t think there’s too much to do in Paphos for three days so I’ll take it easy before my flight to Amman, Jordan, on November 8th.
