Day 44: Saint-André-Avellin to Lachute

Yesterday, I left Nancy and Jean-Philippe’s house shortly after 8 AM. I rode for about ten miles south to Montebello and went to the only restaurant that’s open at the time, Le Café Entre Amis.

I ordered some crepes for breakfast and the food was excellent. The wait staff were also very friendly and caring. With the classical music playing in the background, it was the perfect place to have breakfast. The bill was about CA $30 (US $22) with tip, the most I’ve paid for a meal in Canada. It was worth it.

Once I got on the road again I passed by more farms. The road was flat for the most part. A pair of cyclists passed by me and I saw them again when one of their bikes had a flat tire. They didn’t need any of my help so I cycled on.

In the town of Grenville, I decided to have two hot dogs at Fromage et Cie and an ice cream cone from La Crémière Grenville. I tried to stay as long as my mind can rest since I’m early to arrive at my Warmshowers host’s place. In the end, I exhausted my patience and continued my journey.

For most of the day, I cycled on the road. There was a bike trail that I rode on briefly coming into L'Île-aux-Chats before arriving at Lachute around 3:30 PM.

I found a restaurant called Casa Bella that’s near my Warmshowers host Sylvain’s place. I had a huge Cesar Salad with pasta that filled me up.

At 5 PM, I rode a quarter of a mile to Sylvain’s apartment. I had ridden 47.9 miles for the day.

Sylvain works as a project manager for an explosives company. My first thought was that he works for the military. Actually, it’s a company that makes explosives and other equipment for mining. Sylvain’s plan is to retire after one more year of working then buy a property in northern Quebec or Ontario so he can have a house with plenty of land. He loves to be in the woods rather than a city.

I had a bottle of homemade kefir while Sylvain had his dinner. We chatted more about financial independence and living within our means. We seemed to agree on many things.

After I took a shower I was feeling drowsy so I went to sleep soon after.

This morning, I woke up at 5. Sylvain woke up around 6:30 and made breakfast. I will head out to Montreal soon.

  2. Excited to you to arrive in Montreal! Really loved that place when I visited (also in the summer). I hope you’re enjoying the beautiful green scenery at least as much as we do seeing it through your photos.

  3. Sounds like a chill day. Love crepes and love the pictures. Loved Montreal. Was there May 12-16 then started my bike trip south to Rouses Point, then along the Champlain Valley and Erie Canalway to Buffalo when I met you. We rode into Medina together and stayed at the Gardenview B&B before riding to Mike and Wendy Cartwrights WS. You are moving right along. You will have fun in Montreal!
