First Picture of the New Year

First Sunrise
First Sunrise

I captured the above photograph on the first sunrise of the new year near where I live in North Wales, PA.

I used Aperture Priority mode on a Nikon D7000 DSLR, shot in RAW. I set the aperture to f/5.6 and the ISO at 200. Next time, I would decrease the aperture to something with a greater depth of field. The shutter speed was at 1/8000 of a second.

The development was done in Lightroom 5.7. The major adjustments were increasing the exposure one step to brighten the image a little and dialing down the clarity to give a softer feel. I also increased lens vignetting around the photograph.

There is some blurring of the tree branches but I think that’s OK. Next time I would like to play with the shutter speed a bit more. But I think if I slow down the shutter speed too much I might not get the roundness of the sun as it rises. Also the branches will be blurred even more since I was hand holding the camera. I would get my tripod next time.

Let me know what you think of this photograph so I can improve on my next shot!
